Any disruption in this process may result in some degree of hearing loss. Inner ear movements cause waves in the fluid, in turn stimulating hair cells that activate auditory nerves and send signals to the brain. Three bones in the middle ear (hammer, anvil, and stirrup) transmit vibrations to the inner (cochlea), which is filled with fluid. Sound waves go to the ear canal and cause the eardrum (tympanic membrane) to vibrate.
